Hey! So this is a bit impromptu. I have been really active on twitter the past few months and honestly I feel like it has opened my eyes so much. As an Indian, I feel like South Asians including southeast asians are really discriminated to the point that most people think its normal. Just because we have darker skin color doesnt mean were not Asians anymore. I’m seriously done with all the racism we go through. From people stereotyping us in media as the awkward smart person, to stereotypes about South Asian men online, to curry & bindi related jokes, to me being made to feel unattractive cause of my own skin color because of the media. Colorism = Racism.
It’s unimaginable how some people can be so uneducated like do they really think Asians are only Chinese, Japanese and Koreans ?
I’ve encountered such instances a lot, like when I tell people I’m Asian they’re like “WHAT you don’t look asian?”
I’ve heard people saying that we’re overreacting when it comes to cultural appropriation. Everyone is so used to “idols” calling us curryshitters and dotheads that once we actually call it out you think we’re being too loud about it and that we should just sit back down and let it happen. Thinking that all Pakistani people are muslim and all Indian people are hindu is also a racist act by the way. Just like in America, everyone practices a different religion, even if one is more common than the other.
Let’s not even talk about how much our accents are mocked. I’m sorry if I’m not your fancy yt kid with a british/canadian/australian accent that you love to fetishize. Mocking accents have never been funny and personally I feel really uncomfortable and unsecure right now while talking to my friends who’s mother tongue is English. It’s way different than mocking a British accent so do not use that to justify your racism.
The LGBTQIA community existed for centuries in south asia and were treated with respect, especially the intersex community. After the british came they were surprised seeing the people not following the gender binary so they enforced extremely homophobic and transphobic colonial laws.
It really is sickening how people just ignore us when we say that something is offensive like the fox eye trend for example or when someone mocks our culture. Yes, I come from a country that’s rich in culture and heritage. And it’s beautiful. But it doesn’t mean you can snatch it and use it as your aesthetic. ( Here’s to you Kim Kardashian – my culture is not your fucking aesthetic )
What makes me upset is the way we get excluded. Be it news about racism against Asians or an Asian appreciation post, it’s extremely rare to see south Asians being included.
It’s sad how South Asians are brushed under the rug every single time as if we don’t exist.
Well, that’s all. I know I cannot change this myself but I hope I could raise a little awareness and this was more about expressing my concerns than anything else.
While we’re at it, here are a few Indian petitions that you can sign.
Petition to end targeted online harassment towards women.
Men should help with household chores as much as a woman
Introduction Of Mental Health Hours in every school
Inclusion Of “transgender” while booking airline tickets
Thank you.
Until Next Time,
Milly ❤
